EMDR Consultation

Consultation focuses on the mastery and integration of standard EMDR therapy in practice. The consultant values the integrity and independence of the consultee. The consultant and consultee are expected to operate within the ethical standards and scope of practice of their respective professional licenses.

The intended purpose of consultation is for the consultant to provide guidance and feedback to the consultee regarding their use of standard EMDR therapy with clients. Consultation is not supervision. The consultee maintains full responsibility and autonomy for the decisions involving their clients’ treatment. The consultant provides feedback on the consultee’s implementation of standard EMDR therapy and is not directive with client treatment. The consultant’s primary responsibility is to evaluate the consultee’s ability to implement the standard EMDR therapy’s eight phase protocol, three-pronged approach.

Types of Consultations

Consultation for EMDR Basic Training

EMDR Therapy trainees have to complete the 10 hours of consultations with an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant or Consultant In Training. Dr Shaima Al Fardan will be running consultation groups between parts I and II as well as after the training is completed. The dates and times will be announced at the time of the EMDR basic training. We suggest completing 4-6 hours between the Part I and Part II trainings, with the remainder completed after the Part II training. Consultation hours may be completed in a group setting via teleconference and cannot exceed 10 consultees.

Per EMDRIA Policy, students have ONE YEAR from the time that they start their Part I training to complete consultation in order to receive their EMDR Basic Training Certificate.

Upon completing all ten hours of consultation, trainees should submit documentation of their consultation hours to Dr Shaima Al Fardan who will record their completion of the training program and will issue a Certificate of Training. Completion of consultation is required before a Certificate of Training in EMDR Therapy can be awarded.

EMDR Certification Consultation

EMDR Consultation for certification is completed in both Individual and group settings. All consultees are expected to participate and be prepared to bring their own EMDR case presentation material content for discussion.

Consultant in Training (CIT) Certification

During the consultation-of-consultation process, the consultant provides direction, input and evaluates the CITs skills and ability as a consultant.

Please visit EMDRIA at www.emdria.org for further information on these requirements.

During my training, I chose to specialize in issues that were often considered taboo and rarely discussed in the country, even though they were prevalent. As an Emirati psychologist, I felt it was both my responsibility and the community’s to tackle these culturally sensitive topics in the most approachable and respectful manner.”

Dr. Al Fardan is a highly experienced Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years of experience in the UAE and the United States. She has obtained degrees from prestigious institutions in both the United Kingdom and the United States, and has received comprehensive training in both countries.
